I saw a man die by accidentally falling in front of a fast Mumbai local

I was coming back from college today and at around 5:45 at bhandup station I saw a man die by accidentally falling in front of a fast local.

This is the first time I have ever seen something like this. I was just shocked for a minute or two. I was just standing there while the police called for a stretcher and made everyone stand clear.

I could still see the body in front of me. The blood on the tracks, the face and head unrecognizable from seemingly being squished in. Just a limp, crushed, bloodied corpse, with ribs sticking out, limbs scattered on the track several meters away, something that seemed to be brain or intestinal matter. I still feel sick to the stomach.

I cannot imagine what the victim’s family must be going through. One morning he just left for work or office, and now he is dead just like that. How could they ever bear to see it, the corpse so battered and hacked.

Even more than that, I cannot imagine how strong minded the person who gathered up his remains was. He just came along, treating it like just another day at work, and wore his gloved and gathered up what remained of him while I just stood by, still not able to process what happened.

I just don’t know how to process all this. I know I am just a stranger and have nothing to do with this, but I just cannot get the image out of my head.

The post has a comment under it that reads,

Feeling sad for the victim’s family. Also for you, OP. Such experiences tend to stay with you a long time.

The sad reality is that on an average, 6–8 people die on the tracks every day in Mumbai. Some due to accidents, like the one you witnessed, and some due to people just being idiots. It is a huge number if we look at it, and has just been accepted now.
